Addiction Solutions of Nantucket held its annual Race for Recovery on September 24, 2023, despite the chilly temperatures and overcast skies created by Hurricane Lee. The event garnered an impressive turnout, with a record-breaking 354 runners and walkers and $123,500 raised. Also contributing to the event’s success was the number of sponsors, donors, and volunteers, which also increased from the previous year. These figures mark a significant increase from last year regarding the number of participants and the funds raised. The proceeds from this year’s event will contribute towards adding a third weekly clinic that is already available, increasing the number of patients served by the ASN clinic.
The race featured a traditional 5K run and a two-mile walk, with Jim Congdon, David Desnoyers, and Zach Tracy securing the top three spots among men. Among women, Lisa Wisentaner, Molly O Mara, and Jinx Howe emerged as the leading three participants. Click here for a complete overview of runners’ times.
A little history of this event starts with Darcy Evans, who originally created this annual event on September 26, 2020, to benefit Addiction Solutions Nantucket. In 2022, Darcy passed the baton to ASN board member and Chair (R4R) Allan Bell. Allan recruited Arlene O’Reilly, owner of Mind’s Eye Communications, to help with communications and technical logistics; with a baseline of volunteers, these two raised funds and sponsors by 55% from the previous year. In 2023, ASN expanded the board to include a dynamic, passionate, and dedicated group of Islanders. The results reaffirm our community’s power and commitment to each other.
Addiction Solutions reminds the public that addiction does not discriminate and affects individuals from all walks of life. The organization, led by Dr. Timothy Lepore, offers a medically-managed, medication-assisted treatment program (MAT) to provide hope and relief to those with a substance use disorder. Aline Wommack, RNMS, serves as the clinical coordinator for the group. Donations to this 501(c)3 nonprofit are fully tax-deductible and can be made online.
